if: Surrender

As a member of Southern Lurcher Rescue I see a lot of uncertain, fearful hounds transformed as they surrender into a loving home.

Howling Dogs

This pic is for Kirsty, its my 'Howling Dogs' sculpture created by Karen Holbrook aka Mrs Art Barn of Wartling. Finn does not like to be left without his human pack, he sings, cries and sometimes howls. We are working on it...

Birthday Hounds

A special week for our hounds.
It is two years since Finn, seen standing on the box watching the world go by, came to live with us after being 'found wandering' by Southern Lurcher Rescue.
Bea, horizontal as usual, is 6 years old tomorrow. She is a retired racing greyhound from Brighton and Hove Retired Greyhound Trust.

if: Dusty

We begin our working days sweeping dust, we usually blame living on a main road and our hounds. This week we are super dusty thanks to our building work. Every studio should have a sunshine dustpan and brush.

Sid

I forgot decorating up ladders makes me dizzy. I said I would paint Mr PWP's new Studio, but despite large quantities of luxury seafood and chocolate buttons, he had to do the ceiling. We are finally at the top coat stage. Bea likes the rollers!

Yesterday we went to a friends for Mr PWP's birthday tea. He requested scrambled egg, peanut butter and jam on toast and trifle. His wish was granted, plus a cake with a sparkly star on top and gifts including the brilliant Sid Dishes.

Plastered

The Gallery renovation is proving fun. Richard the carpenter moves quickly, his cupboards and walls look fabulous. Wade the plasterer left a silky smooth wall and no mess, not even a tiny splash. We are knotting and priming at the weekends to keep up. Mr PWP and the lovely Nina have their long awaited office, the Gallery is smaller but tongue and groove heaven. All the odd downstairs doors that burst open with any draft, have been replaced with doors that match and close.

if: Chicken

The topic for Illustration Friday this week - chicken.
Poultry keeping is very fashionable in England at the moment and poultry prints are a frequent request. For a few years we had hens clucking away in the back garden.
A visitor to my Gallery brought in a photo diary of this feisty cockerel (who met an early end) and asked me to print his portrait. I have used him as a model many times, he is a pleasantly triangular shape. This morning I coloured him in.

Four Walls

We tried the open plan approach for three years, merging a graphic design studio, painting studio and gallery. It was fun, but noisy. This week the Electric Pencil office is being created with walls, doors and a large window.

Gallery Renovation

Its 2011 which means we are renovating downstairs. It started at 8am with a red lorry party outside. There will be a giant cupboard into which all paper boxes will fit, a new 'enclosed' office for Electric Pencil aka Mr PWP and the lovely Nina. I will have a new painting studio, immediately behind the Gallery. The hounds will have a downstairs snug. All in three weeks...

if: Deja vu

Who knew Illustration Friday would be this much fun? This week the topic is 'Deja vu' and I have spent a very pleasant afternoon printing, cutting, sticking and using orange felt pens. About once a month, out walking, I catch a movement against the hedges and a fox will come into view, take a long hard look at us and then make a break for it. It is strangely familiar, but always new.

Open Studio

In 2010 Arts Hut felt more like a shop than a gallery, with functional ceramics, tea towels and hundreds of greeting card designs. In addition to opening 5 days a week, we also held stalls at events including agricultural shows and other artists open houses.

For 2011 I'm firmly back to the original Open Studio concept. Arts Hut will open every Monday and Friday 9am - 5pm, with visitors warmly welcomed at other times, by appointment. Leaving me free to sketch, print, visit the framer, drop off and pick up work from other Galleries. I have my eye on a few new Galleries to approach and have entered the East Sussex Open and applied to South East Open Studios.

A few dates for your new diary:

'Cupboard Love' March 4th - 20th
Kitchen still life, happy hens and a plethora of tableware and textiles.

'Labour of Love' June 3rd - 19th
Solo exhibition of paintings, prints, illustrations and greeting cards inspired by life in Herstmonceux.

Both Shows are open daily 9am - 5pm
Plus Sunday opening 1pm - 4pm

Ketchup

This holiday the baby WP's gifted us the mustard and brown sauce pots to keep our ketchup company. They stir a fond memory of annual pilgrimages to Cardiff shopping centre in the 1970's, the highlight a Wimpy Burger Bar.

Happy New Year

My resolutions for 2011 involve keeping a more orderly home and baking.

I have used the renovation of our aged cottage, built in 1727, as an excuse for messy habits. When guests are due, a cleaning and cooking frenzy takes place. The rest of the time wobbily piles of books, magazines, papers and clothes grow in most rooms. Now we have decorated, installed heating and fitted blinds, I resolve to keeping our lovely home looking good, plus cook more often and try new recipes.
