Patsy Douglas

Yesterday we spent the day in Rye, celebrating the life of Patsy Douglas, also known as Jo Sheridan. What a fascinating life, we shall miss her.

Patsy Douglas November 12, 1919 – December 17, 2011

Born Mary Patricia Devlin, but known to her family and close friends as Patsy and professionally as Jo Sheridan, Patsy was born in the Falls Road area of Belfast in 1919. She was the eldest of eight children, with seven sisters and one brother. Her father was Joe Devlin, famed trainer of the Belfast Celtic football team and later a celebrated masseur and recognized healer.

After St. Dominic’s girls’ grammar school, Patsy ambitiously upped sticks and travelled to the hustle and bustle of life in London to work in the Civil Service. During the 1940s she worked for the Foreign Office dealing with anti-German propaganda and she stayed on at the end of the war to work on the Russian desk as a code breaker.

With her inquisitive mind, vast vocabulary, sharp wit and her innate healing ability, Patsy broke into journalism as an agony aunt for “Woman” magazine in the early 1950s and by the mid 50s she had advanced her career to feature writer, specializing in astrology, palmistry and the occult for various magazines.

With the gift to translate complex subjects into simple understandable messages which were entertaining and witty, Patsy fulfilled her publishing dream and released her first book in 1960. Her book, “What your hands reveal” soon became a classic text on the subject of palmistry and is still cherished to this day by many experts and students of palmistry. Other books soon followed, including “The Floral Oracle”, based on her in-depth knowledge of flowers, herbs and trees of the zodiac.

As her writing career took off, Patsy made waves in the occult as Assistant Editor of “Prediction” magazine, and was following in her father’s footsteps in the art of healing. She built a very successful hypnotherapy practice at a time when this was a very rare profession for anyone, let alone a woman during the 1960s.

Moving in famous circles, Patsy appeared on numerous TV programmes, and intrigued TV personalities, including Alan Whicker, who was most impressed with her when he brought a film crew to her consulting rooms in London in 1966 to film a feature for “Whicker’s World of Healing.”

Towards the end of the 60s, Patsy met her kindred spirit Bosie Douglas, who she married on Saint Patrick’s Day in 1972 and loved him dearly for the rest of her life, lovingly referring to him as her Golden Bosie. Patsy continued her interest in the zodiac, writing annual horoscope books for each sign of the zodiac for Mayflower Books, which became extremely popular, with sales reaching over five hundred thousand per year.

In the 1980s, Patsy fulfilled her ambition to open her own alternative therapies centre in London, where she practiced hypnotherapy and provided facilities for other therapists to help people resolve their physical or emotional problems. By the 1990s, the centre had become world famous, offering over 20 different types of alternative therapies, with numerous patients from the entertainment business and medical doctors referring their clients to the centre.

After an extremely successful, active, creative, spiritual and intellectual career, Patsy left London to retire in the quiet town of Rye in East Sussex with Bosie in 2002. Patsy enjoyed retirement studying, learning, working on new projects and entertaining others as she recounted an episode from her past or commented on what was happening around her.

Patsy was a remarkable woman who captivated everyone who met her. She was a woman way ahead of her time and successfully competed in male dominated careers. You could always rely on Patsy to tell you exactly what she thought. She had a very unique outlook on the world. Her sharp wit, truthfulness, wisdom and warm nature engaged everyone who met her, and her caring spirituality healed many. Patsy had two daughters and two sons, three granddaughters and four great-grand children and she was very proud of all of them. She celebrated her 92nd birthday in November and her sharp mind and memory were unimpaired till the end.

She was one of a kind and can never be replaced.

Our morning walk takes place in the dark.
Touchwood Kitchens have the most elegant Christmas lights.

Our afternoon walks have grown, we made it to Coopers Croft on Christmas Eve.

Coastal Highlights

We stayed at Tamarix, Winchelsea Beach twice this year in April and September. The first photos are Mr PWP and Finn at low tide and also our 'beach field' shingle garden.

Next Hastings Old Town, we always park at The Stade and stick to the East Hill part of town. In 2012 the Jerwood Gallery will open there. Just a hop up the high street is Made in Hastings, Judges Bakery and a host of second hand shops bursting with treasure.

East is Pett Level, you have to climb up the high bank to see if the tide is out, if it is, watch out for spooky groins and ancient woodland.

If the shingle gets too orange and you need to see a green field. Rye Military Canal is verdant.

Next Rye Harbour Village, to visit Avocet Gallery and see the iconic Red Hut.

We have been visiting Rye for six years, the Rye Art Gallery, bookstore and sweetie shops are curious. This year we climbed to the top of all the cobbled hills. Friends say you should climb the church tower.

Then onto Camber Sands. Sand, golden, 'proper' sand and powerful winds.

Finally Dungeness. Wonderfully bleak. We are reliably informed the fish and chip shop is mind blowingly good. I just stand outside Prospect Cottage day dreaming.

Rye At Christmas

Yesterday we had arranged our Christmas trip to Mr PWP's family in Rye, but sadly Patsy, who had reached the splendid age of 92, died last weekend. We arrived and took a tour of the High Street and met up with Dougie and Brycee for lunch.

Sticky Books

It started at college; black sketchbooks, tied with ribbon, bursting with drawings, exhibition invites and doodles. Weighty books happily heaved onto my lap, pages thick with weaving and knitting samples. This blog replaces the sticky books up to a point. Christmas is a great opportunity to get out the PVA and clear the drawers of special bits and bobs. The book above is full of magazine clippings for our next house. No buyers yet, but we are still patient and optimistic.

The storm dislodged our aerial and delicate garden fence. Then the rain came through the roof neatly filling a dish on the kitchen table with water, no splashes.

I am thrilled that my online portfolio also acts as a shop, the Red Hut painting above is now on its way 'special delivery' to Surrey.

In anticipation of moving to the coast, I have a new framer, who has sorted me out with a moulding that can work with both thin panels and my thicker canvas. Hand painted in a soft white.

The black lighthouse will be posted tomorrow to Chepstow. I am mastering the art of folding the Post Office Post Box, it is like the Krypton Factor.

Along the South Downs and verdant rolling countryside.
Through Newhaven, past the new incinerator and docks.

Monoprinting

You need a sheet of plastic from your framer
A roller, water based block printing ink, pencil and cartridge paper from an art supplies store
Roll an ink rectangle, roughly the same size as your cartridge paper, on the plastic
Lay your paper lightly on top of the ink
Draw over your sketch again, pressing harder where you want darker lines
Rub the paper lightly with your finger to pick up ink blobs and patterns
Peel back your paper
There, in reverse, is your print
Wash ink off plastic and roller, then repeat process for other designs
Monoprinting is messy, I wear a shirt and work in a room with a large sink and washable floor

I have dug out of storage every old painting canvas and board, determined not to waste any. Then painted all day every day, our furniture and walls are covered with wet paintings, grouped into sizes. Will they dry in time for the photographer?

We were on our way to the Strand Quay Gallery in Rye, but got distracted. It was love at first sight, a table with green legs and a rocking chair with a curved back. This week without my own Gallery to tend I have managed to keep incredibly busy, banking, packing greeting cards, talking with framers, potential new stockists and publishers. A 'Hastings Hut' was sold at the Strand Quay and an Arts Hut customer bought the red teapot painting by mail order. The weather is fabulous, ideal for painting in the garden.

Yesterday we dropped new works to Avocet Gallery and arranged to meet a family who wanted to buy one of my paintings as a birthday gift. It was a perfect match between customer and understanding of subject matter, she used to live at Greatstone. It was fun to see my painting with its lovely new owner.

This weeks Illustration Friday topic is boundaries. I have started creating monoprints of Rye. In the 14th century, it was a fortified town, and at the time there were four gates built to allow access inside the walls - the Landgate, Strandgate, Baddings Gate and the Postern Gate. Of the four gates, only the Landgate remains today.

After hours of coastal exploring we flopped into the dramatically refurbished Ship at Winchelsea Beach, for hot chocolate, cake and pork & herb sausages to take away.

Hailsham Arts Festival

Hailsham High Street 9am. Awash with artists carrying large paintings and long suffering partners armed with drills and hammers hanging art in shop windows, as part of Hailsham Arts Festival. Then Ms Rachel Widdows turned up in Jilly Cooper mode, we were almost speechless. I have use of an empty shop, in truth a warehouse. As Hailsham has a cattle market I thought it appropriate to take the cows.

Arts Hut is closed and I have a sore throat caused by sitting outside in the rain. Yesterday I started my new work routine. I approached two Galleries to exhibit and received positive replies from both. I also wrote to two shops in Rye to see if they would like to stock my greeting cards and posted 5 prints and 15 greeting cards to my aunt in Silchester for her coffee morning. We had one customer as the front door was unlocked, plus our neighbour arrived with a ladder, cutter and set to work on our hedge. This week I am finishing paintings of Rye Harbour for Avocet Gallery and paintings of Dungeness for my final open studio which starts on September 9th.

Bank Holiday Weekend

On Friday I went to a meeting to discuss hanging art in empty shop windows in Hailsham. I have touched up an old udder painting in anticipation. Also the annual visit of the little people took place, Mr PWP filled the cupboard with strange sweets and we spent Saturday evening at our 'refurbished' pub. Sunday included a local adventure park, eastbourne pier and hound walks. On Monday I gave the medieval festival a miss, our guests returned reporting 'Mouse Town' has been updated, there was a mouse on a skateboard...
