Lewes Artwave Festival 2009

Today Pat and I (with a great deal of help from Bill and Mr PWP) hung our exhibition 'Rural Scenes and Animals' in Bill's very beautiful antique clock shop, next door to the Chalk Gallery, Lewes. Over the next few weeks I will post individual paintings for you to see, but for today - a glimpse at what's on offer. I hope those of you in Sussex will visit. The full programme is at

Posh Cows

This week I begin in earnest to finish all paintings in the studio as preparation for the Lewes Artwave Festival and a smart September at the Arts Hut. First to be given its final touches and a neat black edge is 'Posh Cows' my unofficial title for the beautiful bottoms of Troliloes Hugo Pebble, Troliloes Hugo Rustic and Troliloes Excellency Olleander. Above Bea our little blue greyhound helps out.

Dotty Pots

Barbara Lawrence has delivered some hot out of the kiln dotty pots. My favourites are the ram soap dish at £11 and big bird bowls at £17. Why not start the day with a dotty toast rack £30, elegant mugs £15 and egg domes £6.

Riverside Party

With an optional dress code of 'tribal', we spent Friday evening celebrating the Hardings 30th wedding anniversary, riverside in Haven Field, Court Lodge Farm. The tribal outfits were great fun, the fireworks impressive, plus we met Joe the Jevington Lurcher again and lots of friends.

Udder on Ultramarine

This week I am painting one of my favourite cows from Lime End Farm. Having concentrated last year on cattle faces and portraits, I am enjoying different viewpoints. This is the second layer of my 'udder on ultramarine' painting, now drying in the sunny Arts Hut window.

Artwave Festival 2009

Ride the Wave and Get the Vibe – It’s Artwave 2009!

Preparations are under way and excitement is building as artists and makers are busy creating inspirational and engaging pieces of art to exhibit as part of the annual Lewes District Open House Festival - Artwave 2009

Running from Saturday 29th August until Sunday 13th September, Artwave 2009 showcases creative works by local artists, offering visitors the chance to buy pieces direct from the artists and makers often from their own homes or studios.

This year, the Artwave Open Houses cover the breadth of Lewes District, including venues in Ditchling, Firle, and Chailey, as well as the larger towns of Seaford, Newhaven and Lewes. Often set in stunning surroundings, the Open Houses offer visitors a stimulating and creative experience away from the hustle and bustle of city life.

Organised by Lewes District Council’s Tourism & Economic Development Team, Artwave 2009 has not only encouraged an increasing number of artists to take part, but has also introduced local residents and visitors to stimulating and new experiences, right on their doorstep.

Artwave co-ordinator Angie Osborne said,

“I am both excited and delighted with the build up to Artwave this year. We are extremely fortunate to have so many talented artists in and around this area and they all offer a wide range of art mediums. Artwave 2009 is set to inspire and to celebrate anyone already involved, or wanting to take part, in the visual arts”

If you’d like to get involved, it’s not too late. A competition is running called 'The Gods in the Landscape', in conjunction with the Sussex Bards, Druids & Ovates. Anyone can create a piece of visual art, based on the title theme, and an exhibition will be opened at the Crypt Gallery, Seaford in September. A winner will be chosen from the submissions and the artist awarded with £100.

The official brochures are being circulated at the beginning of August. Simply pop into Lewes or Seaford tourist information centre to pick up a copy, or telephone the Artwave office direct on 01273 484497, email, or visit our website

Lurcher Caption Competition

Last week we won the caption competition on the Southern Lurcher Rescue website, so our turn to post a picture and pick a winning caption. I picked one of Finn’s tennis shots and there were 16 entries.

The winner was Angie with:
“Bea is not impressed, she thought Finn was taking her to Wimbledon, how very dare he”

These ones also made me laugh:
“Go on break a leg, show off”
“Retract undercarriage now”
Bea “Finn. That much enthusiasm is so vulgar”
“With the exception of a small, eccentric group of fans from the Harlow area (quite possibly insane), Wimbledon's experiment in using lurchers instead of tennis balls was received with lukewarm enthusiasm.”

Hastings Hot Houses

Yesterday we enjoyed a trip to the seaside at Hastings. We walked the hounds along the pebble beach, they experienced the seagulls and fishermen wide eyed, before a spot of book shopping. Then the hill to Anna Keiller's Open Studio. As always bursting with goodies, my favourite sculpted birds and the giant fortune cookie. Do have a look at Anna's website and blog link on the right.

Mr & Mrs Mooncie

Our warmest congratulations to 'the lovely Nina', who works with us at Arts Hut, on her wedding to Nathan. A celebration remembered fondly as a tonal variation of purple: including outfits, cake and table decorations. The venue was the beautiful Northease Manor School, Rodmell. The weather was excellent, for confirming German stereotypes, that in England it often rains.
