Sun Drunk

Miss P coined the phrase 'sun drunk'. All my customers are giddy and brimming with good humour. There have been long walks to the trout lakes, gardening and sunbathing.

South East Open Studios 2011

The proof for my entry in South East Open Studios arrived in February. Suddenly June 3rd is just ten weeks away. Plans are hatching, my good friend Rachel has kindly offered to act as agent for my Private View. I am instructed there must be fine wine and elegant invitations, Mr PWP is set to work.

Commissions for individuals can be a bit tricky. In this case my subject was such a gentle hound, with bright blue eyes, silver grey hair, I ended up creating two paintings. One has gone to its new home.

if: Cultivate

This weeks Illustration Friday topic is 'cultivate'. The sun is out, Monty Don is back - presenting Gardeners World from his own garden. Our small wild garden is bursting with snowdrops and daffodils. I am anticipating Arts Hut customers bringing their fresh veg in for a print portrait. Last years highlight, these peas.

I am working on coastal paintings and prints, for two shows this June, my annual Open Studio and a group exhibition on Brighton seafront. I start by looking at old photographs of exhibitions, above a 2008 show to accompany the bluebell walk on a local farm. I have spent a few evenings looking at books of Whistler, Joan Eardley and Richard Diebenkorn. In the here and now, expressive, gestural and with fascinating colours are Helen Booth Hannah Woodman and Sam Hall

Snug and Studio

Mr PWP and I are property fidgets, buy an unloved character house, spend a few years without heating, TV, curtains.... refurbish and then get itchy feet to find another one. Kirsty and Phil have a lot to answer for. Fortunately our current home has so many nooks and crannies, that it is possible to keep moving rooms and shape shifting how we use the space. Earlier this year the Electric Pencil designers had an enclosed office built, whilst my old studio is now a snug and meeting room. The hounds circle the new sofa thinking it is just right for them. My new studio is a rectangular space at the back of the Gallery, which looks wild and messy at the moment, but is just a whoosh of my marigolds and a day of back breaking clearance away from being beautiful.

if: Stir

When this weeks Illustration Friday topic 'Stir' popped into my inbox, I imagined a pleasant afternoon printing my way through the growing spoon collection in my studio. Then I remembered Nigella's cookery series, the most useful tip I picked up from five episodes was "Never stir rice with a spoon, always use a fork." I now use a fork to stir all sorts of rice and pasta pots. I have bought some lovely old dictionaries from the charity shop to use for collage, adding my fork which stirs.

Turning 43

The company of fine funny folk, fish and chips, dancing, pink fizz, old fashioned sweets, chocolate cake, pink converse and a strange illuminating plastic fish. What more can a girl want?

if: Warning

This print is a warning to myself. If I don't stop eating chocolate I shall have to buy a swimsuit like this, to hold my stomach in, when we go on holidays.

World Book Night in Herstmonceux

I was expecting conversations about gay men, butterscotch angel delight, ham with fat around the edges and Fray Bentos pies. I was not disappointed. The first couple through the door also brought me sweet 'moulds' to barter for their copy of 'Toast'. Our home used to be a Sweet Factory, all bits and bobs of sweet production are gratefully received.
Then a steady stream of people who hadn't known about World Book Night, but had noticed Arts Hut was open on a Saturday again. My new opening hours have gone down like a lead balloon. I agreed to open Wednesday to Saturday, like in the good old days.
They left with their books and strict instructions to watch the Culture Show 'World Book Night' programme

Our wild garden is bursting with lovely snowdrops.
Wee greyhound had two injections and is enjoying fish and rice served with a silver spoon.

Tuesday, 1 March 2011

Today is St Davids Day, the mini daffs look great.
In Wales my niece will be wearing a black pointed hat, shawl, check skirt, white pinny and daffodil buttonhole.
Sadly wee greyhound is unwell, we are ankle deep in daffodil coloured vomit. To the vets...
