Studio Practice

Today I am working in my studio, snug and garden, forming a trail of small paintings. I had created a clear floor space in the snug to add more layers to my three large paintings, our hounds had other plans, finding the concrete very cooling. I started using wide edged canvas when customers asked if they could buy my paintings without their beautiful hand painted frames. So an essential task for today is to paint the edges a warm grey.

Having spent Monday in Hastings where every shop window is bursting with royal wedding goodies. I have caught up with some patchwork flag bunting. If it is still there at the weekend it will be a miracle.

Today we delivered another bag of my greeting cards inspired by huts, boats and gulls to Made In Hastings and wandered through the Old Town and along the promenade.

Quilts On The Farm

Our friends live at Carters Corner Farm, they hold fundraising events and an annual bluebell walk. Many moons ago I studied textiles, so their barn full of quilts was a great way to spend a Sunday afternoon. I especially liked the quilt with spotty hens and dangly legs. Followed by chatting with the alpacas, goats, dogs and poultry, before a sneak preview of the bluebell wood.

If: Journey

The Illustration Friday topic this week is 'Journey'. A recent Southern Lurcher Rescue auction, reminded me of the difficult journey some of our hounds make from being lost or given up, to the security of a new home. Every sight hound deserves a lovely soft bed.

My coast paintings are spread out across the studio and snug for inspection. As works in progress there is a lot of burnt sienna, paynes grey and white.

It is seven weeks until my Open Studio. In the last two weeks my computer has died, plus two teeth and both my ears decided to be a bit tricky. Yesterday was spent in the garden following trips to the dentist and doctor. The good news is I can now eat and hear. I have one painting to post and some cattle prints to organise, then my series of coastal paintings will be back out on the slab.

South East Open Studios

For the past three summers I have joined in with South East Open Studios an artist led, not for profit organisation supporting individual artists and craftspeople to welcome visitors into their working environment and share their inspiration and creative processes.

In my immediate area three venues show a diverse range of work: painting, prints, sculpture, ceramics and jewellery, with demonstrations, talks and opportunities to see sketchbooks, materials and techniques used. Across the region the work also includes: photography, textiles, glass, wood and metal.

Visiting open studios is a visual arts treasure hunt, our Guide gives you a starting point and clues for what you might find when you get there. How you get there is part of the experience and a map and mobile phone are essential for remote rural areas. Discovering artists and craftspeople at work down a country lane or inside a building you walk past every day is part of the thrill.

This January I applied for the role of 'Advertising Officer' with the Management Team. This is us meeting up to agree publicity. In just a few weeks 33,000 copies of The Guide, 10,000 Friends leaflets and 10,000 posters will be distributed across Kent and East Sussex.

Margaretann Bennett

In my fantasy life I would have a painting by Margaretann Bennett in every room. I wrote to her last year, asking if she had any promotional material that she might send me, she did indeed. Last week a second large envelope arrived full of leaflets from recent shows and an invitation to her current exhibition at Panter and Hall Do have a look at her website Margaretann Bennett

At The Coast

We were visiting Rye recently, so took a trip to my favourite haunts. Soon we will be staying here for Easter. My 'Open Studio' 2011 is inspired by Winchelsea Beach and Prospect Cottage, Derek Jarmans' home and garden at Dungeness.

As Seen In

Here he is. The first time I've seen a painting of mine staring out at me from the pages of a national magazine. I get a mention in the editorial and a web link.

Have you herd?

My cattle paintings have renewed interest as 'Lime End's Josh' is featured in the home of Tricia and Hans Petri in this months '25 Beautiful Homes',  page 154. I have had a few enquiries about whether he is available as a print, the answer is Yes! I just need to sort out sizes and prices and pop him on my website.
I am reliably informed my funky new imac will be fit and ready for action on Thursday. Stand by your beds please.
