Chicken Spoon

All wooden spoons have been rounded up and are in the studio awaiting their portraits. This is the very worn wooden spoon I use for sizzling chicken. Palette - ultramarine, raw sienna, burnt umber and mixing white.

Painting Spoons

My quest to spend October painting Sussex landscapes on 8 inch square boards came unstuck fairly early on. My drawings were interesting, but the South Downs refused to be re presented in such a small space. Plan B appeared in the form of a cardboard box full of old silver, jelly moulds, whisks and wooden spoons from my friend Clare Askaroff.

I have been a fan of Margaretann Bennett Still Life paintings for many years and have been researching other contemporary still life painters. There is a link list for you - bottom right. So here is the first of many kitchen paintings using ultramarine, raw sienna and white.

The Books

Our home has been dotted with wobbily piles of books for three years. Mr PWP plans to find a local carpenter to design and build furniture that can cope with our 1727 beams. The compromise - temporary bookcases from IKEA. The big yellow lorry couldn't off load on the A271 so, some two weeks later, two lovely London geezers in a big white van delivered our long awaited bookcases. They were easy to assemble and I have almost decanted the wobbily piles onto shelves. Other works in progress include blinds for all upstairs windows and a wood burner for my studio. After three years of  portable electric heaters and unplastered walls, we are aiming for snug this winter.

Christmas Cards

Publishing my own cards in 2009 involved ordering enough stock to fill the huge cupboard in our sitting room, I thought they would last for decades. Yesterday I packed 450 Whippet, Greyhound and Lurcher Christmas cards, some destined for up north and others we hand delivered to Cuckoo Cuckoo Gallery in Hastings.

Watercolour Spoons

When all my oil paintings are wet, wet, wet - it's time to change materials. My watercolour box was alarmingly dusty, but now I am happily painting away.

Today in 2007 I opened the door of Arts Hut for the first time. To celebrate our third birthday, here is our home in 1907, then trading as Herstmonceux Stores.

Star Shoulder Bags

Today the manekin is wearing Shoulder Bags by Rosie Bull Designs.

A month ago a young woman popped into Arts Hut, ignored my obvious wrestle with a lollipop laurel and said "My friend can sew, she makes really beautiful things". One thing led to another and ... ta da Star Shoulder Bags.

Just wait until you see the Pea Pod Brooches...

Seeing Stars

I'm starting subtle, with a star birdy tea cosy. However in a month or so I'm expecting blokes up ladders, garlands and individual stars of wonder. Its almost that time again, here is the official blurb.

"Dear Friend

You are invited to join this year's Christmas Trail, the theme of which is 'Herstmonceux Advent Calendar'. The idea is to have fun and decorate your windows to make the village look even prettier than usual.

If your window faces directly onto Gardner Street please collect a box to decorate from Alison at The Willows Pharmacy.

For everyone else please decorate your windows or roofs with LARGE TWINKLING stars.

The Herstmonceux Advent Calendar starts on Wednesday 1st December with late night shopping until 8pm. A new 'Advent Box' will be opened daily in the village until Christmas Day.

For more information phone Anna on 01323 831831 or pop into Arts Hut."

Kitchen Paintings

A few months ago I bartered two round tables with my friend Clare Askaroff at in exchange for objects for an exhibition called 'Bake'. Last week she delivered her box of treasures. Whisks, jelly moulds, old cake tins, enamel measuring jugs and spoons. This winter I am sticking with the idea of painting small and suddenly the studio is full to bursting with kitchen paintings.

On a sober note Herstmonceux has seen considerable police activity this week following an assault. With police tape and 24 hour protection of the crime scene opposite Arts Hut, we have had lots of phone calls checking on our well being. We are fine. No doubt we will read all about in the local paper soon.
