Gallery Closed

Arts Hut is closed to visitors this week, as I am painting at the coast. Be back soon.

On The Move

There are neat stacks of paintings everywhere. Yesterday we dropped my paintings off in Brighton for the Artists Open Houses,  Terri and David have a week to hang their house. I am excited to be part of such a fun house, I remember it as full to bursting with art & people. Plus I have tidied my painting studio, for reasons I will reveal next week.

Daisy, Daisy

I have sketchbooks from years gone by bursting with flowers. This sketch is a windowsill at Candlelight Cottage B&B, Cricketing Lane, Herstmonceux, where we stayed for a few months in 2007 whilst builders renovated our new home. This week I am working on a still life, using the sketch of the flowers and painting on a canvas already layered in grey. With cerulean blue, burnt sienna and white oil paint.

Good Morning Limousin

The Thorndean Farm freshers have been out for a fortnight, but are now confident enough for a morning greeting.

Brighton Festival

Starts in May, we have collected our Artist Open House brochures to distribute. I am exhibiting with Terri, David & guests - 17 artists altogether - at 15 Chanctonbury Road, Hove as part of the Seven Dials Trail. You can enjoy three floors of art, plus take your tea and cake in the Fairtrade Kitchen Cafe or outdoors in the Sculpture Garden.

Watching Paint Dry

Has never been more thrilling. Will my painting of Dungeness Lighthouse, currently basking in the sun at Arts Hut, dry in time for my next show? One of my favourite painters Sandra Flood has started blogging again, posting images of her latest work, with notes about her palette, I will do this in future.

Eastbourne Festival

Is in full swing. Mr PWP and I spent a sunny afternoon at the Casson Gallery, Eastbourne College, stewarding for the Eastbourne Group of Artists. Open Houses abound this week, see Eastbourne Festival for venues and maps, plus why not drop in to the East Sussex Open exhibition at the Towner Gallery.  I am heading into my studio, in preparation for Brighton Festival, I may be some time...

Garden Party

This week we have enjoyed our lush garden, drinking tea and lunching in the sunshine. We have dropped pictures off at the Casson Gallery Eastbourne and I have been finishing paintings for Brighton Festival in May on the theme of 'The Garden'. Tomorrow is the final day of the Hastings Hot Houses Busy bees indeed.

Shop Dog

After walking our houndies at dawn, I like to start my day at Arts Hut with a blast of online life. One of my favourite blogs is written by Miss P she has a stylish emporium, comedic customers and a Saluki hound that escapes. There the similarities end, as she whips up floral delights, cooks like a dream, remembers song lyrics and wears shoes that make my contact lenses wobble. The Hound has recently started his own blog and has asked readers to send in their favourite pics - Finn features.

House Gods

Showing with other artists involves spending longer than usual with their work. I am the proud owner of an Anna Keiller House God with yellow markings but I found this delicious one with turquoise spots on her mantlepiece very tempting. I will be satisfied when I own a fat bird and a Fortune Cookie.

Easter Sunday in Hastings

The last Open House event that Mr PWP and I hosted was in 2007, so yesterday showing with Hastings Hot Houses it all came flooding back the excitement, expectation and laughter. Despite the gloomy weather, 4 Dudley Road enjoyed a steady stream of visitors of all ages, some from the next road along, St Leonards, Battle and even France!

Margaretann Bennett

Is my favourite living painter, Joan Eardley is my favourite dead one, they are both Scottish. I wrote to Margaretann asking if a catalogue of her work was available. I would love to own a book of her paintings and consider why I connect with them so much. She very kindly sent me a package of gallery invites to past shows and directed me to Panter and Hall in London, whose website revealed a selection of her paintings I had not seen before. Do take a look.

April Fool

The Woolpack Inn regulars sit outside smoking & chatting in strong Sussex accents. Usually I get a nod of the head and a 'mornin - 'afternoon or  'evenin as we walk past with the houndies. I return a big smile. Today one of the characters leapt a few feet backwards in the air, gave a look of mock horror and total astonishment at my pink wellies and said "She should have gone to Specsavers instead", which made me laugh a lot.
