Escape to the Country

Each June visitors flock to see artist studios as part of South East Open Studios. This year sculptor Karen Holbrook in Wartling and I signed up to open our Studios and have formed a treasure trail with other independent traders.

Called ‘Escape to the Country’ our trail helps you discover hidden gems within the Herstmonceux and Wartling Parish. Venues include the Truggery, Malthouse, Arts Hut, Windmill, Sussex Tipis, Art Barn, Lamb Inn, Wartling Place and Chilley Farm Shop. No 1. The Truggery
The Truggery at Coopers Croft, Herstmonceux has been making Sussex Trugs for over 100 years.
Open Thursday, Friday and Saturday 10am - 1pm, or by appointment.
Saturday 13th and Sunday 14th both shop and workshop will be open all day.

No 2. The Malthouse
Tearoom and Bistro in Hesrtmonceux offering Morning Coffee, Lunches and Cream Teas. Evening Bistro menu changes weekly, using fresh local produce.

No 3. Arts Hut
Built in 1727, the charming studio gallery of rural artist Anna Wilson-Patterson exhibiting Cattle and Lurcher portraits. Browsers welcome.

No 4. The Windmill
Keep travelling east to Windmill Hill. This unique Post Mill dating from 1815 is the largest in the UK. There is a film, interpretation centre and visits to the mill body, with an exhibition of paintings by Pat McNamara

No 6. Art Barn
A restored milking parlour, look out for the red dot. Specialising in paintings, sculpture and an eclectic mix of decorative items for home and garden. Well worth a visit, as part of South East Open Studios.
