Art Shows

This week has been energising. Visiting the Towner and listening to arts professionals discussing 'art practice' and 'visitor expectations' sent brain cells jangling. Delicious lovebirds arrived in the post. My in box is awash with instructions to join in Artist Open House Festivals, I will show this year in Eastbourne, Hastings and Brighton, before my first solo show at Arts Hut in June. To prepare for this shock to the system and our reclusive lifestyle, I had a moment of reviewing my favourite exhibitions to date.

Birthday Girl

Today Bea is six years old. She is a greyhound bred to race in Leitrim, Ireland. She was bought by a syndicate, kenneled in West Sussex and raced at Brighton and Hove. She ran 83 times. We adopted her from the Retired Greyhounds Trust in June 2009. She is funny, fierce, fragile and entertains us with her happy dancing.

Towner

Tuesdays in my fantasy work schedule are reserved for monoprinting without visitor interruption. However I was intrigued to be invited to a meeting called by East Sussex Arts Partnership for Artist Open House organisers at the Towner in Eastbourne. I did confess in advance that I don't organise Open House trails, just rural trails involving artists and other traders, but I remained on the guest list. From outside I thought the Towner Gallery was bland, inside is more friendly, in a lofty concrete sort of a way. The lime loo's are fun and there were lush red walls for displaying work, causing me to consider whether Arts Hut should have a new dark look. I met a host of interesting folk and learnt a lot at the meeting. I took a quick peek at 'The Dark Monarch' which was really exciting, with not one but two Hepworth's to lust after. On the first floor I could see a host of fabulous paintings. We will return for a day trip. Despite the freezing wind, I took a stroll on the beach to remember what it feels like to be beside the sea.

Birthday Boy

Adopting a stray dog, we took on a threadbare hound without any documents. Today Finn has been with us for a year and we are celebrating his 'birthday', he is about 5 years old, our gentle giant. A year of living indoors, on a good diet, with lots of family and friends to love, his film star looks have returned. He is one of the pin ups for January in the Southern Lurcher Rescue 2010 calendar.

Painting Eggs

Last year I signed up to be a 'Guest Artist' with Brighton Festival Artists Open Houses and yesterday was invited to show at our favourite house in the Seven Dials trails. This led to great excitement, an overload of chocolate digestives and an update to my website. With an exhibition schedule in place, I set to work. For spring I am embarking on a series of still lives, with eggs and feathers. Our Arts Hut hens left their beautiful bijou house with a heart shaped window, to stretch their legs in Cowbeech and Hellingly. However I have fond memories of them and their eggs. The first painting in progress is a large canvas of tiny pale eggs laid by Flo and Maude my frizzle bantams.

Cottage Garden

Having mentioned it yesterday, here are two emerging book piles. I am considering what to plant in our cottage garden, whilst waiting for the hellebores to flower.

Treat

I am a keen book buyer, piles of art books grow quietly in room corners. My treat for January is a tiny book bursting with joy and the work of Elaine Pamphilon I love it.

Lewes Lure

Mr PWP and I keep finding ourselves in Lewes, browsing our favourite antique markets. With considerable restraint I did not purchase another suitcase. The enormous hay pick however demanded to come home with us and will be pride of place at Arts Hut soon.

This week I have been sketching flower shadows...

Cattle Market

There are life size cattle portraits in our living room, this is not good. One spring clean later, with paintings found in far flung parts of the studio, an Arts Hut sale is in full swing. Thorndean's Clover shown top, is a 40 inch square Limousin, yours for just £300. Troliloes Trio is also 40 inch square and also £300. It illustrates March in the local Sussex Farmlife Calendar. Last but not least 40 inch x 30 inch Thorndean's Cliff, just a baby and yours for £250.

Lovely Logs

Saturday was bustling at Arts Hut, until 3pm when the blizzard started. Our friends the farmers 'Arper popped in for coffee, saw our dwindling log pile and dispatched their rider. It is Mr PWP's birthday today, cakes have been baked and candles lit.

Studio Scene

In 2010 I am feeling inspired to paint objects, our cottage and courtyard garden. Following a few canvas stabbing incidents, my painting knives you understand, Richard the framer from Tunbridge Wells has cut me some 12 inch square wood panels. The first layer of primer is on, it is clear there will be splinters. Strange human shapes cocooned in wool, shuffle slowly past the Gallery. It is still snowing in Sussex...

Snow Stopper

Snow stops play in Sussex, cars have been replaced by milk tankers, tractors and gritters. Our village shops are open, so we join in, although in truth our friends have replaced customers. Mr PWP was unable to attend a champagne reception in the city yesterday, no train. He was not best pleased. I am happy in front of the roaring fire and have been busy. The Arts Hut winter show is packed away and exhibition themes for 2010 set. A large heart collage for the window is drying in the studio. My search for new local artists and designers has begun. The day finished on a high, we took the hounds for their afternoon stroll and returned to find the sign fairy had visited.

Going Green

Back to work in a blizzard! After months of dithering the Gallery facade receives its smart green lettering and a new green insert in the A Board. The flag is hung. A few days later the flag is considered too bright, dyed green and re-hung. More fidgeting is needed I fear, until it is absolutely right. Whilst on holidays, Matt our friend, electrician and superhero, has kindly moved furniture up and down stairs, round and round the Gallery. Bare shelves await my attention. In our hall Rob our local carpenter has built, my Christmas gift from Mr PWP, an oak bookcase.
